penang national park

Jungle trek out to Monkey Beach and the turtle beach at Kerachut.

Best time
December to March is usually driest. Start early in the morning to avoid the heat on the trails.
How long
Half a day to a day
Getting there
About 4 hours' drive from KL to Penang, or an hour's flight. From George Town it's about 45 minutes to the park entrance at Teluk Bahang, where Rapid Penang bus 101 ends.

Penang's wild northwest corner: forested hills, quiet beaches and an old lighthouse, all within an hour of George Town. You walk in on jungle trails and, if your legs give out, take a boat back.

Things to do

  1. Monkey BeachA sandy bay about 1–1.5 hours' walk along the coast trail, or a short boat ride.Map ↗
  2. Muka Head lighthouseA steeper climb beyond Monkey Beach to an old lighthouse with views over the sea.Map ↗
  3. Kerachut BeachA long, quiet beach with a turtle conservation centre run by the Fisheries Department.Map ↗
  4. The meromictic lakeA seasonal lake behind Kerachut where fresh and salt water sit in separate layers.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Register at the park office at the entrance before you set off.
  • Bring plenty of water and keep food out of sight. The monkeys know how to open bags.
  • Boats wait at the jetty if you'd rather not walk back. Agree on the pick-up before you go.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
