Nukus is a quiet desert city in Karakalpakstan, and most people come for one museum. The Savitsky collection holds thousands of Soviet avant-garde paintings hidden from the censors, alongside Karakalpak jewellery and textiles.

Good to know
- Give the Savitsky Museum at least half a day; the collection is huge.
- Moynaq is a long day trip, about 3 hours each way. Reaching today's Aral Sea shore takes a 2–3-day 4WD trip with camping.
- Bring cash for cafés and roadside stops outside Nukus.
