nong khiaw
Nam Ou river views, steep limestone lookouts and small villages reached by boat.
- Best time
- November to February is cool and dry, though morning mist often fills the valley. March and April are hazy with smoke; July and August are wet, and the trails get slippery.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- Get to Luang Prabang first: connect in Bangkok, or fly direct to Vientiane and take the fast train, about 2 hours. Nong Khiaw is about 3 hours north by road. Laos is 1 hour behind KL.

A small town on the Nam Ou, where a bridge crosses the river between limestone cliffs. Climb a viewpoint at dawn, take a boat upriver to Muang Ngoi, and spend the afternoon on a balcony watching the river.

Things to do
- Pha Daeng viewpointA steep climb of about an hour to a lookout over the river bend and the bridge. At dawn you may be above the clouds.Map ↗
- Boat to Muang NgoiAbout an hour upriver to a village set in its own ring of limestone peaks.Map ↗

Good to know
- The old boat trip down from Luang Prabang is cut by dams on the Nam Ou, so come by road.
- Pha Daeng is a proper climb: bring water, a torch for a dawn start and shoes with grip.
- There's no halal food here. Fish, eggs and vegetable dishes with sticky rice are the fallback.
