Nizwa was once Oman's capital, and its old centre still gathers a huge round-towered fort, a blue-domed mosque and a busy souk into one easy walk. It's the best base for the forts, villages and mountains of the interior.

Good to know
- Stay over on Thursday night for the Friday market, which is over by mid-morning.
- Food is halal as standard. Ask before photographing people at the market, and keep clear of the ring when the animals come through.
