ngorongoro conservation area
A great volcanic crater full of grazing animals, with cool highland views from the rim.
- Best time
- June–October is dry and good for game viewing, though the rim is cold before sunrise. January–February is also good; April–May brings rain, mist and muddier roads.
- How long
- 1–2 nights within a safari
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Kilimanjaro airport, usually via Addis Ababa, Doha or Dubai, about 14–18 hours all in. The crater rim is about 4–5 hours by road via Arusha and Karatu.

Ngorongoro's main draw is the crater, a collapsed volcano whose floor holds grassland, lakes and forest packed with animals. The wider conservation area adds cool highland scenery and Oldupai Gorge, a key site for human origins.

Good to know
- Sleep on the rim or in Karatu so you can drop into the crater at first light.
- The rim is over 2,000 metres up and cold before dawn, so bring a warm layer.
- Operators and lodges arrange halal meals and packed lunches readily; mention it when you book.
