nagasaki

Hilly harbour city with a top night view, Dutch-era history and castella cake.

Best time
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. The Lantern Festival around Chinese New Year lights up the city with thousands of lanterns. Summers are hot and humid, and typhoons can hit from August to October.
How long
2 days, 1 night
Getting there
Fly from KL to Fukuoka (around 6 hours, often with a connection), then take the train from Hakata, changing to the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen at Takeo-Onsen, to Nagasaki in about 1.5 hours. Highway buses from Fukuoka take about 2.5 hours.

A hilly port city on Kyushu's west coast that was for centuries Japan's main window to the outside world, through Portuguese, Dutch and Chinese traders. Today it mixes that trading history with a sobering peace park and one of Japan's best night views.

Things to do

  2. DejimaThe rebuilt Dutch trading post, once the only door between Japan and Europe.Map ↗
  3. Glover Garden and Oura ChurchOld Western-style houses on a hill above the harbour, next to Japan's oldest standing church.Map ↗

Good to know

  • The city is hilly. Trams are the easiest way around and cover most sights.
  • Gunkanjima boats are often cancelled in rough seas, so don't leave the trip to your last day.
