Fly with one stop, usually via Singapore, Dubai or Istanbul, about 15–17 hours all in. The S-Bahn from the airport takes about 40 minutes to the centre. Germany is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Munich is Bavaria's capital: grand squares, beer gardens and food markets, with the Alps close enough for day trips. The English Garden runs through the middle, and the museums could fill a week.

Good to know

  • Landwehrstrasse and Schillerstrasse, just south of the main station, are lined with Turkish and Middle Eastern restaurants, many of them halal.
  • A Bayern-Ticket covers a day of regional trains across Bavaria for up to five people, handy for the castles; it isn't valid on ICE trains.
