mont-saint-michel
An abbey above a tiny island village, with tides sweeping across the bay.
- Best time
- May, June and September are mild and less crowded. July and August are packed from mid-morning, and November to February is cold, wet and windy, though the island is quiet.
- How long
- 1 day, ideally with a night nearby
- Getting there
- Fly direct to Paris on Malaysia Airlines (about 13.5 hours), then the TGV to Rennes (about 1.5 hours from Montparnasse; some leave straight from CDG airport). From Rennes station a coach reaches the Mont in just over an hour, and a free shuttle covers the last stretch across the bridge. France is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

A Gothic abbey on top of a rocky tidal island, with a whole village of stone houses wrapped around its base. At low tide the bay is open sand for kilometres; at the biggest tides the sea surrounds the Mont again.

Things to do
- Mont-Saint-Michel AbbeyThe abbey church, cloister and monks' refectory sit right at the top, with the whole bay spread out below.Map ↗
- Grande Rue and the back lanesThe main street is all souvenir shops; the stairways and tiny gardens off it are much quieter.Map ↗
- The rampartsA walk along the walls, with wide views over the sand and the tide coming in.Map ↗
- A guided bay walkBarefoot across the sand with a qualified guide, who knows where the quicksand is and when the tide turns.Map ↗
Good to know
- Never walk out onto the sand without a guide. The tide comes in fast and there's quicksand.
- The lanes are calmest before the day coaches arrive and after they leave, so a night nearby is worth it.
- Halal food is hard to find on and around the Mont, so pack lunch in Rennes or Paris.
