- How long
- 3–4 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Nairobi, usually via Addis Ababa, Dubai or Doha, about 13–17 hours all in, then about 1 hour on to Mombasa, or the SGR train from Nairobi in about 5–6 hours.

Mombasa's old town is a tangle of carved doors, mosques and spice shops around an old harbour. A night or two in the city pairs well with the beaches north of the island, for a very different Kenya from the safari circuit.

Good to know
- The old town is mainly Muslim: food there is halal as standard, and modest dress is appreciated.
- The SGR station at Miritini is well outside the island, so arrange a transfer.
