A high, cool plateau in Son La, known across Vietnam for its tea hills, dairy farms and orchards that turn white with plum blossom in late winter. It's a slow road trip from Hanoi, with farm stops and village homestays rather than big sights.

Good to know

  • Blossom and fruit come at different times of year; ask your homestay how the trees are looking before you fix the dates.
  • The tea hills and orchards are working farms, so keep to the paths.
  • Halal food is very hard to find on the plateau; bring snacks from Hanoi and lean on yoghurt, fruit, eggs and vegetable dishes.
