mexico city
Aztec history, mural-filled palaces, leafy neighbourhoods and tacos between museum stops.
- Best time
- February–April and October–November are sunny and comfortable. May is hot before the rains, June–September bring afternoon downpours, and December–January mornings are chilly at this altitude.
- How long
- 4–5 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop, usually via Tokyo or Seoul, about 22–26 hours all in. The airport is 30–60 minutes from the central neighbourhoods. Mexico City is 14 hours behind KL all year. Malaysians don't need a visa for Mexico, but connecting through a US airport would need a US visa.

Mexico City is huge, high up and full of things worth slowing down for, from Aztec temples beside the cathedral to Frida Kahlo's blue house. Plan each day around one area, and eat tacos between the museums.
Makan
- Street tacosAl pastor is the city's famous one, and it's pork; bistec and suadero, both beef, are just as common.Map ↗
- QuesadillasIn Mexico City they don't always come with cheese, so ask for queso, or try fillings like mushroom and squash blossom.Map ↗
- Churros and hot chocolateFresh churros dunked in thick hot chocolate, a city tradition since the 1930s.Map ↗
Things to do
- Historic centreThe giant Zócalo square, the cathedral and the ruins of the Aztec Templo Mayor beside it, plus Diego Rivera's murals in the National Palace.Map ↗
- National Museum of AnthropologyOne of the world's great museums, with the Aztec Sun Stone and treasures from all over Mexico.Map ↗
- CoyoacánLeafy plazas, a busy market and the Frida Kahlo Museum in her Blue House. Book its tickets ahead.Map ↗
- TeotihuacanThe Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, an hour north. Go early to beat the heat and the crowds.Map ↗
Good to know
- The city is about 2,240 metres up; take the first day easy and drink plenty of water.
- Halal restaurants are few, and the many Lebanese places mostly aren't halal. Beans and tortillas can be made with pork lard (manteca), so ask.
