mestia
Stone defensive towers, Svan kitchens and hiking beneath the peaks of the Caucasus.
- Best time
- July–September is hiking season, when the high trails and the road to Ushguli are most reliable. June can still have snow up high; December–March is ski season at Hatsvali and Tetnuldi, a different trip.
- How long
- 3–4 days; add 4 days for the trek to Ushguli
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Tbilisi, usually via Istanbul, Dubai or Doha, about 13–16 hours all in. From there it's about 6 hours by train to Zugdidi, then about 3 hours up the mountain road, so most people split it over two days. Small, weather-dependent planes also fly from Natakhtari, near Tbilisi.

Mestia is the main town of Svaneti, where medieval stone towers rise between the houses below snowy Caucasus peaks. Several days of village walks and day hikes fill easily, without committing to a full trek.

Good to know
- Halal meat is hard to find. Guesthouses will cook cheese, potato and bean dishes if you explain ahead.
- Ushguli is a full day there and back with a local 4WD driver.
- Keep off the glacier and away from its snout; ice and rock fall without warning.
