Melbourne is a city of laneway cafés, trams and food markets, and it's best taken slowly. Its galleries, sport and neighbourhoods are worth a few days before you head out along the coast.

Good to know
- For halal, Sydney Road in Brunswick and Coburg is lined with Lebanese and Turkish bakeries and grills, and the city centre has plenty of halal Malaysian and Indonesian places.
- Trams within the city centre's Free Tram Zone cost nothing.
- 'Four seasons in one day' is a local saying for a reason, so carry a layer and a light rain jacket.
