A big caldera lake about 36 km west of Bukittinggi, ringed by steep green walls. The road down is the Kelok 44, a run of 44 hairpin bends with views over the water most of the way. The lakeside villages are slow and quiet, and Buya Hamka, the writer and scholar widely read in Malaysia, was born on its shore.

Good to know
- Kelok 44 is tight and steep. If you're not used to mountain roads, take a local driver.
- Do it as a day trip from Bukittinggi, or stay a night by the lake for a quiet morning.
