North Sulawesi's capital sits on a bay ringed by mountains, with Bunaken's reefs just offshore. The food is famously spicy, the hills around Tomohon are cool and green, and the forest near Bitung is home to tarsiers. It's a relaxed, mostly Christian city that throws one of Indonesia's biggest Christmas celebrations.

Good to know

  • Minahasan cooking often uses pork, and some dishes use dog or bat. Ask first, or look for halal places, if that matters to you.
  • Tomohon's traditional market sells wild animal meat and can be graphic. Skip the meat section if you're squeamish.
