mae sariang
Shan-style temples, Yuam River evenings and a quieter stop on the Mae Hong Son loop.
- Best time
- November to February is cool and clear, with cold mornings. March and April are hot and often thick with smoke from the burning season. The rains peak in August, when the mountain roads can be slow.
- How long
- 1–2 days
- Getting there
- Fly direct to Chiang Mai (about 2.5 hours from KL), then about 4 hours by road on Route 108 through Hot. There are no scheduled flights to Mae Sariang. Thailand is 1 hour behind KL.

A small, unhurried town on the Yuam River, at the southern end of the Mae Hong Son loop. Wooden shophouses, Shan-style temples with tiered roofs and riverside dinners make it a good night's stop on the long mountain drive.

Good to know
- Route 108 is a long road of bends; drive it in daylight and stop for a break at Hot.
- Halal food is limited. Mae Sariang has a small mosque and Muslim community in town, which is where to ask; Chiang Mai's Muslim quarter near Ban Haw Mosque is the last easy stop for halal khao soi before the drive.
Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
