Madurai grows outward from the Meenakshi Amman Temple, whose painted gopurams tower over lanes of jasmine sellers, brassware shops and tailors. It's one of India's oldest cities, and the food is reason enough to stay the night.

Good to know

  • Phones aren't allowed inside the Meenakshi temple, and there are counters at the gates to leave them. Non-Hindus can visit the halls but not the inner shrines.
  • Muslim-run parotta and biryani shops are easy to find in the city centre.
