Fly from KL to Tawau (about 2 hours 45 minutes), drive just over an hour to Semporna, then take a speedboat for about 45 minutes. Resorts usually arrange the whole transfer.

A small, flat island ringed by reef off Semporna, with a fishing village on one side and dive resorts and water bungalows on the other. It's famous for muck diving, where you hunt for frogfish, nudibranchs and other odd little creatures on the sand, and it's the closest base for Sipadan.

Good to know

  • Mabul is in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone, and some governments' travel advisories cover these islands. Check current advice and follow your resort's rules, including any night-time sea curfew.
  • Sipadan permits are capped each day. Book with a resort or dive operator that can confirm your Sipadan dates.
  • Ask before photographing villagers, especially children, and dress modestly in the village.
