maastricht
Old stone bridges, Limburg fruit pies and quarry tunnels beneath the hills.
- Best time
- May, June, September and October are best for walking the city and the hills around it. December has festive markets, but January and February are cold and grey; summer event weekends can fill the centre.
- How long
- 2 days
- Getting there
- Fly direct to Amsterdam on KLM (about 13 hours). The train to Maastricht takes about 2.5 hours, usually with one change. The old centre is across the Maas from the station. The Netherlands is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Maastricht feels different from the Dutch canal cities: stone streets, gentle hills and Belgium just next door. There are long lunches on the squares, old city walls to walk and hand-cut tunnels under the hill of Sint Pietersberg.

Good to know
- The caves stay at about 10°C all year, so bring a warm layer; they can only be visited with a guide.
- Halal food is easiest at Turkish and Moroccan places; Maastricht is far enough from Amsterdam that it's worth a night.
