maasai mara
Big cats, open grasslands and seasonal wildebeest herds on a classic Kenyan safari.
- Best time
- July–October is dry and usually when the wildebeest migration is in the Mara. January–February is also good for resident wildlife; April–May brings the long rains and muddy tracks.
- How long
- 3–4 nights
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Nairobi, usually via Addis Ababa, Dubai or Doha, about 13–17 hours all in. Small planes from Wilson airport reach the Mara airstrips in about an hour; by road it's 5–6 hours.

The Mara is rolling savannah on the Tanzanian border, with so much resident wildlife that it rewards a visit outside migration season too. The best days leave time to sit with one sighting instead of racing between radio calls.

Good to know
- River crossings follow the herds, not a timetable; you may wait hours or see none.
- Camps can provide halal meals, packed lunches included, if you ask when you book.
- Bush planes have strict luggage limits, usually about 15 kg each in a soft bag.
