lugano
Italian-speaking Switzerland: a blue lake, hillside villages, risotto and palm-lined parks.
- Best time
- April–June and September–October are warm and good for walking. July–August is hot, humid and busy, with afternoon thunderstorms; in winter, boats and mountain railways run less often.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Zurich, usually via Singapore, Dubai or Istanbul, about 15–17 hours all in. The train from Zurich airport takes about 2.5 hours through the Gotthard tunnel. Milan Malpensa is closer, under 2 hours by direct train. Switzerland is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Lugano feels more Italy than Alps: Italian signs, palms along the lake and risotto on the menu. Mountains rise straight from the water, with funiculars to the tops and boats to villages along the shore.
Makan

- PolentaSlow-cooked maize porridge with cheese or stews, served at grotti, the rustic stone taverns in the hills.Map ↗
- GelatoGelaterias line the lakefront, as you'd expect this close to Italy.Map ↗
Things to do
- Parco CianiA lakeside park of lawns, palms and flowerbeds at the edge of the old town.Map ↗
- Monte San SalvatoreA funicular up the cone-shaped mountain above town, with views over the lake's branching arms.Map ↗
- GandriaA village of stone houses and steps stacked above the water, reached by boat or on foot along the Olive Trail.Map ↗
- Old townArcaded Via Nassa and the lanes around Piazza della Riforma, lined with cafés.Map ↗
Good to know
- Take the boat out to Gandria and walk back to Lugano along the Olive Trail, about an hour.
- Halal food is limited; kebab shops in town are the easiest option, as grotto menus lean on salami and meat stews.
