Covered wooden bridges, lake boats and mountain day trips from an old Swiss town.
- Best time
- May–September has the most boats and mountain trains running. November–February is cold, the lake boats run a smaller timetable and Pilatus's cogwheel railway closes for winter.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Zurich, usually via Singapore, Dubai or Istanbul, about 15–17 hours all in, then it's about an hour by train from Zurich airport. Switzerland is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Lucerne is a painted medieval town on a lake ringed by mountains, compact enough to see in a day. Spend a second day on the water or up Rigi or Pilatus.

Good to know
- There are halal Turkish and Indian places in town, but mountain restaurants rarely serve halal meat, so pack lunch for Rigi or Pilatus.
- Keep a clear day for the mountains; cloud can sit on the peaks for days.
