lofoten

Red fishing cabins, sharp mountains and white beaches above the Arctic Circle.

Best time
June–September is best for driving and hiking, with midnight sun until mid-July and July–August busiest. February–March brings snowy peaks, the cod season and a chance of the northern lights; December–January is dark, with tricky roads.
How long
4–6 days
Getting there
Fly with one stop to Oslo, usually via Amsterdam, Doha or Istanbul (about 16–18 hours all in), then fly to Evenes and drive about 2.5–3 hours to Svolvær, or fly via Bodø to Svolvær or Leknes on a small plane. Norway is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Lofoten is a chain of islands where red fishing cabins and racks of drying cod sit under sharp mountain peaks. Bridges and tunnels link the villages, but distances are longer than they look, so pick a couple of bases.

Good to know

  • Split your stay between Svolvær and the Reine end to avoid driving the whole chain every day.
  • Reinebringen's stone stairway is steep and exposed, and not one for snow or ice; the views from the villages are plenty.
  • There's no halal meat, so stock up at the supermarkets in Svolvær or Leknes and cook in your cabin; fish soup is easy, but some cod dishes come with bacon.
