- May–September is best for walks along the Danube and the ride up Pöstlingberg. December has Christmas markets; January–February is cold, when the museums do the work.

- Fly with one stop to Vienna, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul, about 15–17 hours all in. Trains from Vienna airport take about 2 hours. Austria is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Linz is a relaxed Danube city halfway between Vienna and Salzburg, with a big Baroque main square and a riverfront of modern museums. Ars Electronica, its digital art centre, glows in changing colours at night.
