Leipzig is an old trade-fair city with a compact centre of shopping arcades, and the place where Bach spent the last 27 years of his life. It's younger and edgier than Dresden, with artists in old factories and canals in the west.

- ArcadesCovered shopping passages such as Mädler Passage, home to Auerbachs Keller, the cellar tavern from Goethe's Faust.Map ↗
- St Nicholas ChurchWhere the Monday prayers of 1989 grew into the protests that helped bring down the Berlin Wall.Map ↗
- SpinnereiA huge old cotton mill in the west of the city, now full of galleries and artists' studios.Map ↗
- Monument to the Battle of the NationsA giant stone memorial to the 1813 battle against Napoleon, with a viewing platform on top.Map ↗
Good to know
- Eisenbahnstrasse, east of the centre, is lined with Arab and Turkish grocers and grills, the easiest place for halal food.
- The Spinnerei is in Plagwitz, a tram ride west; pair it with a walk along the canals.
