Leh sits at about 3,500 metres in Ladakh's high desert, with a ruined palace above the bazaar and Tibetan Buddhist monasteries along the Indus valley. The altitude sets the pace: a couple of quiet days in town come before anything higher.

Good to know
- The local government asks visitors to rest for 48 hours after flying in before going any higher; altitude sickness is common if you rush.
- Leh has a sizeable Muslim community, and the Kashmiri restaurants around the Jama Masjid serve halal meat.
- Nubra Valley and Pangong Lake need extra days and a protected-area permit, which travel agents in Leh arrange.
