lanzarote
Black lava fields, whitewashed villages and César Manrique's rooms inside volcanic rock.
- Best time
- It's warm all year. March–June and September–November are the most comfortable; July–August are hot and windy, the sea is cool in winter, and dusty calima winds sometimes blow in from the Sahara.
- How long
- 3–5 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Madrid, usually via Dubai, Doha or Istanbul (about 17–19 hours all in), then about 2.5 hours on to Lanzarote. The Canaries are 7 hours behind KL in summer and 8 in winter.

Lanzarote is black lava, white villages and very little green. The artist César Manrique shaped much of it, turning lava tubes and volcanic bubbles into gardens, homes and a concert hall.

Good to know
- Rent a car; the sights are spread out and buses are infrequent.
- Halal meat is limited, so fish, potatoes and cheese do most of the work; the big resorts like Puerto del Carmen have the most choice.
