October to December is cool, dry and clear, which is ideal for views and hiking. Summer is hot and humid, and typhoons can shut the cable car and ferries.

Getting there
Fly from KL to Hong Kong (about 4 hours). The airport sits just off Lantau's north coast, a short bus or taxi ride from Tung Chung. From the city, take the MTR to Tung Chung (about 30 minutes from Central), or a ferry from Central to Mui Wo.

Hong Kong's biggest island, home to the airport and Disneyland, though most of it is green hills and country park. Come for the cable car up to the Big Buddha, the old fishing village of Tai O and quieter beaches on the south coast.

Good to know

  • The cable car shuts for maintenance from time to time and in bad weather. Check before you go; bus 23 from Tung Chung also goes up to Ngong Ping.
  • Dress modestly at the monastery, and keep your voice down in the halls.
