langkawi in 3 days, 2 nights

A first afternoon on Pantai Cenang, a day up the cable car and at the Seven Wells, and a boat trip through the Kilim mangroves before some duty-free shopping and the flight home.

  1. Day 1

    Pantai Cenang

    Morning
Fly from KL, about an hour, and pick up a rental car at the airport. Pantai Cenang is a short drive away.
    Lunch
Laksa Langkawi, the island's own laksa with a sour, fish-based gravy, at a local stall.
    Afternoon
Check in, then spend the late afternoon on Pantai Cenang. Swim, or browse the duty-free chocolate shops along the main road.
    Evening
Grilled fish and prawns at one of the seafood places on the beach as the sun goes down.
  2. Day 2

Cable car and the Seven Wells

    Morning
Drive about 30 minutes to Oriental Village and ride the SkyCab up Gunung Mat Cincang first thing, before the clouds and the queues. Cross the Sky Bridge over the rainforest at the top.
    Lunch
Lunch at Oriental Village, at the foot of the cable car.
    Afternoon
Telaga Tujuh, the Seven Wells waterfall, is a few minutes' drive away. Climb the jungle staircase to the pools at the top in shoes with good grip.
    Evening
Rest back in Cenang, then have dinner at the night market. A different part of the island hosts one each night, so ask your hotel which is on.
  3. Day 3

    Mangroves and home

    Morning
Drive about 45 minutes to the Kilim jetty in the north-east for a boat tour through the mangroves and limestone cliffs, with eagles circling overhead.
    Lunch
Lunch near the jetty, or in Kuah on the way back.
    Afternoon
Stock up on chocolate at the duty-free shops in Kuah, then drive about 30 minutes to the airport, drop the car and fly home.

Good to know

  • The SkyCab can stop in strong wind or heavy rain. If Day 2 looks grey, swap it with Day 3's boat trip.
  • Rather swim than watch eagles? Swap Kilim for an island-hopping trip from Pantai Cenang, which stops at the Lake of the Pregnant Maiden on Pulau Dayang Bunting.
  • Chocolate and liquor are duty-free here, but there are limits on what you can take back to the mainland.
