lake toba
Giant volcanic lake with Samosir Island's Batak villages in the middle.
- Best time
- At about 900 metres up, it's cooler than Medan all year. The drier months are roughly May to September, and it gets busy during Indonesian school holidays and the festive seasons.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- Fly from KL to Medan's Kualanamu airport (about 1 hour), then about 4 hours by car to Parapat on the lake shore. Ferries cross from Parapat to Tuktuk and Tomok on Samosir in about 30–60 minutes.

A huge lake filling the caldera of an ancient supervolcano, high in the hills of North Sumatra. In the middle sits Samosir Island, home to Batak villages with tall, saddle-roofed houses, old stone chairs and royal tombs. It's cool, slow and very scenic: a good place to do nothing for a few days.

Good to know
- Batak areas are mostly Christian and pork is common. Look for halal signs or Muslim-run eateries, which are easier to find around Parapat.
- Samosir is big. Rent a scooter or hire a driver to get round it.
- Bring enough cash, as ATMs on Samosir are limited.
