Lahad Datu is a working port town on Sabah's east coast, surrounded by cocoa and oil palm plantations. Few people stay long. It's the gateway to the Danum Valley rainforest and Tabin Wildlife Reserve.

Good to know

  • Lahad Datu is within the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (ESSZone). Check current travel advisories, and note that night-time sea curfews are sometimes in force off this coast.
  • Book Danum and Tabin stays ahead; the lodges arrange transfers from town.
