Getting there
Fly from KL to Fukuoka (around 6 hours, often with a connection), then take the Kyushu Shinkansen from Hakata to Kumamoto in about 35–50 minutes. Kumamoto Airport has flights from Tokyo and Osaka.

Central Kyushu's big city, known for its huge castle, its bear mascot Kumamon and as the base for trips to Mount Aso. The castle was badly damaged in the 2016 earthquakes; the main keep has since been rebuilt and reopened, while repairs continue on the walls.

Good to know

  • Aso's crater area closes when volcanic gas is high or alert levels rise. Check before you go.
  • Renting a car makes Aso much easier, since buses there are infrequent.
