kuala pilah

Smoked beef in masak lemak cili api, prewar shophouses and the paddy fields at Terachi.

Best time
Any time of year. Come in the morning for kuih and a walk around the old town, then stay for lunch, when the Malay rice shops lay out the most dishes. The Terachi paddy fields are greenest a month or two after planting.
How long

Getting there
About 1.5 hours' drive from KL: the North–South Expressway to Seremban, then Federal Route 51 over Bukit Putus. Seremban to Kuala Pilah takes about 40 minutes.

The market town of Negeri Sembilan's Minangkabau heartland, over the Bukit Putus pass from Seremban. The old town is rows of prewar shophouses and kopitiams, and lunch is the reason to drive out: daging salai, smoked beef in fiery, turmeric-yellow masak lemak cili api, is this area's dish. Seri Menanti's wooden palace is 15 minutes away.

Good to know

  • Make lunch the main meal: the masak lemak spreads are fullest around midday, and the smoked meat goes first.
  • Add Teratak Za'ba and the Wave Rock at Batu Kikir, about 20 minutes up the road towards Bahau.
