Bukit Bintang's malls and Jalan Alor on arrival, old KL from the botanical gardens to Chinatown with Thean Hou Temple at dusk, and the Twin Towers before heading home.

  1. Day 1

    Bukit Bintang

    Morning
    Drive in, or take the ETS to KL Sentral. Flying in from Sabah or Sarawak, the KLIA Ekspres gets you to KL Sentral in about half an hour. Stay around Bukit Bintang to be near the food and the monorail.
    Lunch
    Nasi lemak: coconut rice with sambal, anchovies, peanuts and egg.
    Afternoon
    Escape the heat in the Bukit Bintang malls, such as Pavilion, and wait out the afternoon storm indoors.
    Evening
    Dinner on Jalan Alor, where tables fill the street every evening.
    Night
    Walk the covered walkway to KLCC, about 15 minutes, to see the Twin Towers lit up from KLCC Park.
  2. Day 2

    Old KL

    Morning
    Start early at the Perdana Botanical Gardens, then walk past the National Mosque to Merdeka Square, about 15 minutes, where the Union Jack came down at independence.
    Lunch
    Walk on to Chinatown, about 10 minutes, and eat around Petaling Street.
    Afternoon
    Central Market's Art Deco hall for crafts and souvenirs, then back to the hotel to rest through the heat.
    Evening
    Thean Hou Temple, a 15-minute Grab ride, at dusk. Its hilltop gives a wide view of the city.
    Night
    KL Hokkien mee for supper: thick noodles fried dark with soy sauce and pork lard.
  3. Day 3

    Twin Towers and home

    Morning
    Go up to the Petronas Twin Towers skybridge, booking a slot online ahead. Then a walk in KLCC Park below.
    Lunch
    A mamak lunch: roti canai, mee goreng and teh tarik.
    Afternoon
    Head home, or to KL Sentral for the train or the airport.

Good to know

  • Use the LRT, MRT and monorail. Traffic and parking eat into your day.
  • Carry an umbrella, as afternoon storms are common.
  • Thean Hou Temple is at its most colourful around Chinese New Year, when the lanterns are up.
