- May–June and September are best for walking. July–August is busy; December has a Christmas market on the main square, while January–February can be freezing, with icy pavements.

- Fly with one stop, usually via Istanbul or Dubai, about 15–17 hours all in. The airport train reaches Kraków Główny in about 20 minutes. Poland is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Kraków was Poland's royal capital, and its old town came through the war nearly intact. A huge market square sits at the centre, Wawel castle stands on a hill by the river, and Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter, is now full of cafés.

Good to know
- Book Auschwitz-Birkenau well ahead; it's about 1.5 hours away and entry is by timed ticket.
- Halal kebab and Middle Eastern places are scattered around the old town and Kazimierz.
