- Fly from KL to Jakarta, about 2 hours, then drive about 3–4 hours to Anyer or Carita on the Banten coast, where boats leave for the islands. On the Lampung side, boats leave from Canti, about 1.5–2 hours' drive from Bandar Lampung.

A group of volcanic islands in the Sunda Strait, between Java and Sumatra, left behind by the huge eruption of 1883. In the middle of the old caldera sits Anak Krakatau, the 'child of Krakatoa', which rose from the sea in 1927 and is still active. Day and overnight boat trips run from the coasts of Banten and Lampung.

Good to know
- Check the volcano's alert level before you book. Exclusion zones change, and trips are cancelled when it's active.
- Go with an operator that has proper life jackets. The Sunda Strait can get rough.
- The 2018 tsunami hit this coast. Note the evacuation routes where you stay.
