Go for the beef, stay for the harbour lights, mountain ropeway and sake breweries.

Best time
Spring and autumn are most comfortable. Summers are hot and humid, and winter brings the Luminarie light festival.

Getting there
Fly to Kansai International (about 6.5 hours from KL). A high-speed ferry runs from the airport to Kobe Airport, and trains from Osaka reach Sannomiya in about 20 minutes.

A port city squeezed between the Rokko mountains and Osaka Bay, about 20 minutes from Osaka by train. Its trading past gives it a cosmopolitan feel, with old foreign merchants' houses, a small Chinatown and, of course, Kobe beef.

Good to know

  • Real Kobe beef is certified and restaurants usually show the certificate. 'Wagyu' alone is not the same thing.
  • Himeji Castle is about 40 minutes west by train, so it pairs well with a Kobe stay.
  • The Nada area has several old sake breweries with small museums you can walk around.
