ko mak
Coconut groves, flat cycling lanes and small beaches in the eastern Gulf.
- Best time
- December to March is the best of the dry season, with calm, clear water; April is hot but still dry. From June to September the monsoon brings rain and rough seas, and several boat services stop.
- How long
- 3 days
- Getting there
- Fly to Bangkok (about 2 hours from KL), then either drive about 5 hours or take a 1-hour Bangkok Airways flight to Trat. Speedboats to Ko Mak take about an hour from Laem Ngop or Laem Sok. Thailand is 1 hour behind KL.

A small, mostly flat island between Ko Chang and Ko Kood, covered in coconut and rubber plantations, with quiet beaches and no big resorts. Days are spent cycling, snorkelling and not doing much at all.

Good to know
- Check which pier your boat leaves from; Laem Ngop and Laem Sok are about half an hour apart by road.
- Sandflies can bite on still days, so bring repellent and a beach mat.
- There's little halal food on the island. Seafood and egg dishes are the easy fallback.
