knysna
A broad lagoon, forest walks and sandstone headlands on the Garden Route.
- Best time
- October–April is warm enough for both the coast and the forest. December–January is packed with South African holidaymakers; winter is cooler, and rain can come in any month.
- How long
- 3 days, within a longer Garden Route trip
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Johannesburg or Cape Town, usually via Singapore, Dubai or Doha, then about an hour on to George. Knysna is about an hour's drive from George, or about 6 hours from Cape Town by road.

Knysna sits around a broad lagoon on the Garden Route, with two sandstone headlands guarding its narrow mouth to the sea. It's a good base for forest walks, oysters and short drives along the coast.

Good to know
- Plettenberg Bay and the Tsitsikamma forest are easy drives, so stay a few nights rather than moving every day.
- The channel at the Heads has strong currents; it's for looking, not swimming.
- Halal choices are few here. Seafood is the easy option, or stock up in Cape Town or George if you're self-catering.
