kiruna
Arctic snow trips, Sámi culture and a mining town being moved across the landscape.
- Best time
- February–March has snow and more daylight than midwinter, good for dog sledding and the northern lights. June–July brings the midnight sun, September autumn colours and dark nights; December–January is very cold and dark.
- How long
- 3–4 days
- Getting there
- Fly with one stop to Stockholm, usually via Amsterdam, Doha or Istanbul (about 16–18 hours all in), then about 1.5 hours on to Kiruna. A night train from Stockholm takes about 17 hours. Sweden is 6 hours behind KL in summer and 7 in winter.

Kiruna is Sweden's northernmost town, built for a giant iron-ore mine that is now swallowing the old centre, so the whole town is moving a few kilometres east. Most people come for the snow, the Icehotel and the northern lights.

Good to know
- Book winter tours that lend thermal suits and boots; it often drops below minus 20.
- Halal meat is very hard to find in Kiruna, so plan on fish and vegetarian meals, and tell tour operators in advance about any meals included.
