kinabatangan

River cruise for proboscis monkeys, hornbills and pygmy elephants.

Best time
Wildlife is around all year. The drier months, roughly March to October, are easier. Heavy rain from around November to February can flood the riverbanks.
How long
2 days, 1 night (3 days if you can)
Getting there
Fly from KL to Sandakan (just under 3 hours), then about 2–2.5 hours by road to Sukau or Bilit, where most lodges and homestays are. Lodges usually arrange the transfer.

Malaysia's second-longest river winds through forest, swamps and oxbow lakes in eastern Sabah, and its banks are some of the best places in Borneo to see wildlife. Boat cruises at dawn and dusk turn up proboscis monkeys, hornbills and crocodiles, and with luck Bornean pygmy elephants and wild orangutans.

Things to do

  1. River cruisesGo out at dawn and late afternoon, when monkeys settle into the riverside trees.Map ↗
  2. Oxbow lakesQuiet lakes off the main river, good for birds and the odd crocodile.Map ↗
  3. Night walkA guided walk by torchlight for frogs, insects and sleeping birds.Map ↗

  5. Village homestaySome riverside villages run homestays, if you'd rather stay with a local family than at a lodge.Map ↗

Good to know

  • Bring binoculars, insect repellent and a light rain jacket. Leech socks help on forest walks.
  • Give wildlife space, especially elephants. A good boatman won't crowd them, so don't push for closer.
