At 3,805 metres, Mount Kerinci is the highest mountain in Sumatra and an active volcano. It rises above the tea estates of Kayu Aro, inside Kerinci Seblat National Park, one of the last strongholds of the Sumatran tiger. Most people come to climb it, usually over two days with a night camping on the slopes.

Good to know

  • Hire a registered guide and porter. The trail is steep and the weather turns quickly.
  • Nights near the summit can drop close to freezing. Bring a proper sleeping bag and warm layers.
  • Check the volcano's alert level before you go.

Last checked October 2026. Things change, so check opening times, fees and transport before you go.
