kaziranga national park
One-horned rhinos, wild buffalo and wetland birds in tall Brahmaputra floodplain grass.
- Best time
- November–March is the season, and February–March is best for sightings, once the tall grass has been burned back. The park closes for the monsoon floods from about May to September, then reopens range by range in October.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- No direct flights from KL. Fly with one stop, usually via Kolkata, to Guwahati (about 7–9 hours all in), then it's about 4–5 hours by road to Kohora. India is 2.5 hours behind KL.

Kaziranga's tall grass and wetlands on the Brahmaputra floodplain hold about two-thirds of the world's greater one-horned rhinos. Jeep safaris also turn up wild buffalo, swamp deer, elephants and plenty of birds, and tigers live here too, though they're rarely seen.

Things to do
- Central range (Kohora)The most popular jeep route, through grassland and pools where rhinos and buffalo feed.Map ↗
- Western range (Bagori)Open country with the park's thickest concentration of rhinos.Map ↗

Good to know
- Two jeep safaris in different ranges show quite different country, so it's worth doing both.
- Assam has a large Muslim community, so halal chicken and mutton are easier to find than elsewhere in the northeast, and lodges can arrange it.
