Small Java Sea islands, shallow reefs and grilled fish in the town square.
- Best time
- April to October usually brings calm seas for the crossing and clear water for snorkelling. December to February is the west monsoon, when high waves often cancel the boats for days at a time.
- How long
- 3–4 days, plus the journey
- Getting there
- AirAsia flies direct from KL to Semarang, about 2 hours. Jepara is about 2 hours by road, then the fast boat takes about 2 hours, or the slow ferry 4–6 hours. A night in Jepara or Semarang on each side makes the connections easier. Central Java is 1 hour behind KL.

A national park of 27 small islands in the Java Sea, north of Jepara, with one sleepy main town. Days go on island-hopping boat trips between shallow reefs and white-sand islets; evenings on picking a fish to grill in the town square.

Things to do
- Island-hopping boat tripA day of snorkelling stops and lunch on a sandy islet, the reason most people come.Map ↗
- Tanjung GelamA palm-fringed beach on the main island's west coast, the spot for sunset.Map ↗
- Kemujan mangrove trailA boardwalk through the mangroves on the island next door, joined to the main island by a bridge.Map ↗
- The alun-alun at nightThe town square turns into a seafood market in the evening: choose your fish and they grill it.Map ↗
Good to know
- Keep a spare night on the mainland before your flight home; rough water can cancel the boats.
- Food is halal as standard; the islanders are almost all Muslim.
- Pick a snorkelling trip that keeps people off the coral, and skip the captive shark pools.
