kampung agong

Coconut groves, paddy views and bicycles round a kampung-style park near Penaga.

Best time
Any time of year. Mornings and late afternoons are best, as there's little shade between the photo spots at midday. The paddy around it is green a month or two after planting and gold just before harvest.
How long
Half a day
Getting there
About 4 hours' drive from KL on the North–South Expressway, then about 20 minutes north of Butterworth to Penaga. From George Town, allow about 45 minutes over the Penang Bridge.

Kampung Agong is a kampung-themed park on family land among the coconut groves and paddy of Penaga, on the mainland north of Butterworth. Agong was the nickname of the owner's grandfather, who farmed coconuts and rice here. People come to cycle the lanes, picnic under the palms and take the photos everyone takes on the giant swing.

Good to know

  • Weekends bring families and photo shoots; a weekday morning is much quieter.
  • There's a homestay and camping on site if you want to stay for the sunset over the paddy.
  • Bring a hat. The paths between the palms are more open than they look.
