kagoshima
A city facing a smoking volcano, Sakurajima, plus kurobuta pork and shochu.
- Best time
- Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Summer is hot and humid, and that's also when the winds tend to blow Sakurajima's ash over the city.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- Fly from KL to Fukuoka, about 6 hours (often via another hub), then take the Kyushu Shinkansen to Kagoshima-Chuo in about 1.5 hours. You can also fly into Kagoshima Airport via Tokyo or Osaka.

Kyushu's southernmost big city sits across the bay from Sakurajima, an active volcano that still erupts regularly. It's a laid-back place with good food, and the base for the sand baths at Ibusuki, the samurai houses at Chiran and the boats to Yakushima.

Good to know
- Check the daily ash forecast. On heavy ash days, an umbrella and a mask help.
- Sakurajima's crater area is off limits. The viewpoints are as close as you can get.
