jurassic coast
Sea arches, white cliffs and fossil beaches along the Dorset and Devon coast.
- Best time
- May–September has long days for walks and beach stops, with May–June and September quieter than the school holidays. November–February is wet and windy, and rain makes cliff falls more likely.
- How long
- 3–4 days
- Getting there
- Fly direct from KL to London (about 14 hours) on Malaysia Airlines or British Airways, then take the train from Waterloo to Wool, about 2.5 hours, and a 15-minute taxi to Lulworth Cove. The coast is spread out and buses are slow, so a hire car helps. The UK is 7 hours behind KL in summer and 8 in winter.

The Jurassic Coast runs about 150 km along Dorset and East Devon, its cliffs showing 185 million years of the Earth's history. Pick one stretch: Lulworth and Durdle Door in the east, or Lyme Regis and its fossil beaches in the west.

Things to do
- Durdle Door and Lulworth CoveA limestone arch over the sea and an almost round cove, joined by a hilly coast path of about 20 minutes.Map ↗
- Lyme RegisA seaside town with an old curved harbour wall, the Cobb. Mary Anning found her famous fossils on the beaches here.Map ↗
- CharmouthThe easiest beach for fossil hunting, with a heritage centre that runs guided fossil walks.Map ↗
- Old Harry RocksWhite chalk stacks off the headland, an easy walk from Studland.Map ↗
Good to know
- Fossils are for picking up off the beach, not hammering out of the cliffs. Keep away from the cliff base, where rocks fall without warning.
- Lulworth and Lyme Regis are well over an hour apart by road, so split your stay if you want both.
- Halal food is scarce along the coast, so self-catering helps; Bournemouth, at the eastern end, has the most choice.
