Mehrangarh Fort sits on a cliff high above Jodhpur, with the old city spread below in a maze of blue-painted houses. Down in the lanes are stepwells, spice stalls and the clock-tower market.

Good to know
- The blue lanes are people's homes, so keep doorways clear and ask before photographing anyone.
- Snacks and thalis are vegetarian almost everywhere; the old city's Muslim-run restaurants are where to find halal mutton.
