Impossibly clear turquoise lakes and waterfalls, unreal in autumn colours.
- Best time
- Late September to October for autumn colours, which is also the busiest time, especially during the October Golden Week. Winter is quieter, with snow and frozen waterfalls.
- How long
- 2–3 days
- Getting there
- Fly from KL to Chengdu, about 4.5 hours. From there, take a 1-hour domestic flight to Jiuzhai Huanglong Airport and a bus of about 1.5 hours to the park, or the high-speed train to Huanglong Jiuzhai station and a bus from there.

A long valley in northern Sichuan, on the edge of the Tibetan Plateau, known for lakes so clear and blue they look edited. Boardwalks link the lakes, waterfalls and Tibetan villages, and the whole valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Good to know
- Daily visitor numbers are capped. Book tickets ahead with your passport, especially in autumn.
- The upper lakes sit around 3,000 metres. Take it easy, drink water and bring warm layers even in summer.
- Stay on the boardwalks. Swimming and wading in the lakes are not allowed.
