Getting there
Fly direct from KL to Colombo (about 3.5 hours), then it's about 6–7 hours north by train or road; the northern line reopened in 2026 after Cyclone Ditwah. Or fly direct to Chennai or Tiruchirappalli and take IndiGo's short hop to Jaffna. Sri Lanka is 2.5 hours behind KL.

One of the most significant Hindu temples in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. It stands in the town of Nallur. The presiding Deity is Lord Muruga in the form of the holy Vel.

Jaffna feels different from Sri Lanka's southern circuit: Tamil signs, Hindu temples, palmyra palms and a flat, dry landscape at the island's northern tip. Come for the food and the temples, with a day out on the lagoon causeways and islands.

Good to know

  • Men take off their shirts to enter Nallur, and everyone leaves shoes outside.
  • Nainativu takes most of a day with the drive and the ferry.
  • Jaffna's food is mostly Tamil vegetarian and seafood, which makes eating easy; halal meat is harder to find.
